Streambank & Gully Erosion Control

Riparian Management for Hill Country farms

  • An option is poplar and willow tree planting on outer bends of river channels and at the foot of erosion prone slopes and up hillslope watercourses.
  • Wide spacings along straight river reaches will also protect scarce valley faults from collapse into river channels.

Tunnel Gully Erosion

  • Tunnel gully erosion is a farm management problem creating hazards for both farm staff and stock.
  • It is best controlled by planting poplar or willow poles into or beside tunnel gully holes.
  • Poles may need additional length to keep shoot growth out of reach of stock.
